Women and Estate Planning
This page was created because in general it seems women are more interested in Estate Planning than men are. I do not know why this difference exists, but it seems to be a national phenomenon rather than a regional one.
Women take the lead
Many times when I meet with married couples it seems the wife is the person who always asks the most questions and takes the most notes. Women seem to want to be guided through the Estate Planning process while men just want you to do it for them.
I thoroughly enjoy the attitude women bring to the discussion table, and I wish more men would copy the women. I do not let my clients sign anything unless I am sure they understand what they are doing. I never have a feeling from my female clients that they do not know what is going on or that they are just doing it because their husband told them it is the right thing to do.
Single women
If I were to name one type of client whom I think should come in more, it would definitely be single women. I think because single women are used to men trying to take advantage of them in the market place, they think that their attorney is going to do the same thing.
I am particularly sensitive to the needs of single women. It may be because I am the father of two daughters and that I have three granddaughters. It may also be because I have always felt women and men were equals (except where women are superior, of course).
I enjoy discussing a woman’s concerns about Estate Planning and to be able to find a way to properly address those issues.
