Living Will

In South Carolina the formal name for a living will is a Declaration of Desire for Natural Death.  Living will is just the popular term because it is much easier to say.

Basically a living will states your desire that, should you ever become permanently unconscious or if you have a terminal illness from which you will die in a relatively short period of time, you want all medical treatment removed from you and you wish to die a natural death.

The living will does have a clause in it that you will continue to receive “comfort care” so that you do not suffer.  This will not be removed when the other medical treatments are removed.

Finally, the living will allows you to decide if you want any feeding tube to remain or be removed should the medical treatments be removed.
